What makes a good hanger? What creates this tool, which without its existence a man’s wardrobe would be left to hang helpless on hooks and be squeezed shapeless by straps? Most people know what makes a bad hanger. Plastic and wire arms with no support and even less warmth are hallmarks of bad construction and worse craftsmanship. Many discussions surround the bad parts of a hanger, but less highlight the good. Here, we discuss the materials and construction of quality hangers to ensure your next hanger purchase is a proper one.
Solid Wood Construction ~Good luxury hangers are made of wood. The best hangers are made of Beechwood. One piece of Beechwood. Using a sturdy single piece of wood versus two pieces of soft wood creates a lasting product. Solid, grade A Beechwood will last a lifetime.
Ring Hook ~
The ring hook is important. Why? Because it’s how a hanger actually hangs. It should be strong and mounted by a washer to ensure it doesn't swivel and/or unscrew unnecessarily.
Fully Contoured Profile ~
Luxury wooden hangers should follow the shape of the body’s natural shoulder. Our shoulders aren't straight and horizontal, nor should your suit hangers be. Shirt hangers are the exception to this rule.
Felted Trouser Bar ~
Not all hangers come with trouser bars. But those that do should have a smooth and tactile felt which holds trousers in place without falling off and/or creasing. The bar should be thick enough to not leave a mark from the fold over the bar. Many people, in locations with definite seasons, leave some of their suits and trousers hung unused for months at a time. When they are once again called upon, they should look like they were only hung up yesterday.
Shoulder Flares ~
The ends of the shoulders of the luxury suit hanger should be wide and curved to maintain the shape of the tailored jacket and to ensure it molds to your shoulders each time you wear it. The shape of your suit must be maintained to make it last and look sharp.
